Following are tasting notes of some Red Burgundies at The French Club in San Francisco last year.

1999 Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Louis Jadot.  Medium brick red color. Mature but elusive nose. Rather spare and dry in the mouth. A nice wine but a bit of a disappointment to me as I am a big fan of Jadot. Recommended. *

2002 Vosne-Romanée aux Brûlées, Michel Gros.  Medium red color. Forward, complex nose. A very good wine that is ready to drink. Medium body with ample fruit. Outstanding. ***

2006 Charmes-Chambertin, Michel Magnien.  Lovely fruit nose. While this wine is on the lighter side, it is smooth as silk with great fruit flavors.  Quite drinkable now but should improve for 2 to 4 years.  Outstanding. ***

2006 Clos Saint-Denis, Michel Magnien.  Tight nose. Deeper color and flavor than the above wine.  This wine has good underlying structure and needs 5 to 7 years in the cellar before it will be at its peak with the tannins resolved. Extraordinary. ****

2006 Clos de la Roche, Michel Magnien.  Nose closed just now. Great balance and firm tannin on entry although it falls off very slightly at the end. It should have enough fruit to age until the tannins resolve. Highly Recommended. **

2006 Morey-St.-Denis Les Chaffots, Michel Magnien.  Firm tannin on entry but falls off slightly. Nice fruit.  Medium weight.  Recommended. *

2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers, Michel Magnien.  Quite light but still enjoyable. Drink now. Recommended. *

2006 Volnay Clos d’Audiguec, La Pousse d’Or.  Lovely “real” Pinot Noir aroma. An excellent lighter style Burgundy with good balance.  Will improve for 2 to 4 years. Highly Recommended. ***

2006 Volnay Clos de la Bousse d’Or, La Pousse d’Or. Another excellent lighter style Burgundy similar to the above wine but with more tannin.  Should improve a bit longer  – say, 3 to 5 years. Outstanding. ***

2006 Volnay Clos des 60 Ouvrées, La Pousse d’Or.  Rather light and hollow. A bad bottle? Not rated.
