 burgundy 2016 [1]

Accompanied by my longtime friends John Brincko and Geoffrey Troy, who are also Contributing Editors to the Underground, I have just returned from Burgundy. We enjoyed wonderful sunny weather with the vineyards ablaze with color and tasted 2015 Burgundies from barrel. This was the 36th year of Burgundy visits to taste wine from barrel. And, to put it very succinctly, the Red Burgundies we tasted were, as a group, the best I have ever tasted. They are simply remarkable in terms of concentration and balance.

Later I will have a full report on our visit and the wines tasted. What I will say now is that there are many extraordinary wines and many that are not well known. That is, the vintage has produced great wines from bottom to top. And, as I said, it is no exaggeration that the wines are remarkable. The consistency and quality from village wines to Grand Crus is something that I have never experienced.

Also, I hope to follow the report on the 2015s from barrel with an article on food and wine in Burgundy.  As usual, we had some remarkable wine and food lunches and dinners with a few new surprises. So stay tuned!
