It has been quite a year. And, it is especially so for many of us here in California. It is very sad that so many lives were lost and so much property destroyed. But we feel blessed. Life goes on, and there are many reasons to be especially thankful this year. Now, as always, Thanksgiving is clearly on the horizon. It is a very special day to give thanks and be with family and friends. And, it is also the meal that I look most forward to each year.
Since returning from my annual trip tasting Burgundy last week (I have made this trip nearly every year since 1981, and I will have a brief note soon followed by a full report later this year). My wife, Laurie, and I have been busy shopping and cooking and getting ready for the big day. This year we expect to have 15 relatives and friends at our house for dinner. Our menu is virtually the same each year with a large assortment of foods accompanying the roast turkey.
The wines differ somewhat from year to year, and again this year I am planning Crémant de Bourgogne (sparkling wine from Burgundy) with preserved French cherries in liqueur to drink with our assorted appetizers. With the dinner I will have a new wine, 2018 Beaujolais Nouveau from Domaine Dupeuble served along with an assortment of French Rosés, and at least one or maybe two Ridge Zinfandels.
I have written a lot about Thanksgiving and my articles are all accessible. If you would like to read about previous Thanksgiving dinners with many ideas for food and wine click here).
Happy Thanksgiving!
In Vino Veritas,
John Tilson
