Uncorking My Favorite Summertime Sippers

Only in Southern California, could I write a column on comfort wines and winter nectar one week and the very next week, be able to write about wines for the hot weather. How lucky and blessed are we?

Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Grigios and summer are a match made in heaven. Hot sunny days and casual, light meals call for wines that are fresh, crisp flavorful and versatile. Sauvignon Blanc’s and Pinot Grigios are all that, and much more.

I find them the perfect wines to enjoy in my patio, in the evening time, relaxing or snacking on crackers, cheese and crusty breads. Great wines to sip at the pool, or to pack up, for a trip to the beach. More fun to share with a friend, but great also when it’s just for you.

Fusing vibrant fruit and intriguing herb notes in a sleek uncomplicated style, both Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Grigios refresh like no other wine. Served chilled, they deliver pure pleasure, whether enjoyed all by themselves or with a meal. Plus they represent genuine value when compared to Chardonnay (credit hall). Serving these two wines is a pleasure that doesn’t require a special occasion.

Some things to remember about both Sauvignon Blancs, and Pinot Grigios:

The younger, the better — their fresh, zesty character is their appeal and they show the best, within two years of the vintage.

Keep one or two chilled in the refrigerator, it is the ultimate in convenience, and ready whenever you are.

Forget formality. Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Grigios taste great from a wineglass, but taste just as great from a tumbler. Just kidding. I can’t believe I said that.

Forget all the rules you’re used to hearing. They will both pair excellently with chicken and fish, pasta salads, light pasta dishes, with veggies or pesto, but both are wonderful with grilled sausages, barbecued ribs, steamed clams, burgers and hot dogs, crusty breads and an assortment of your favorite cheeses and crackers, and lots more.

Be adventurous! Believe me they can handle most any types of foods. With Asian cuisine, Mandarin and hot spicy Szechwan dishes, they are a perfect match.

Try some of my favorites, both from Italy and from California:

Pinot Grigio from Castello Banfi, La Famigilia, Pasqua, Fontana Candida, Montevina, and Bollini.

For Sauvignon Blancs, all from California, try, Honig, St Supery, Girard, Kenwood, Mason, Voss, Frogs Leap, Hanna, Firestone, and Groth.

No wonder, and rightfully so, in my opinion, these ARE the official white wines of summer.

Treat yourself and your guests with these two great summertime sippers.
