GREAT 2018 RED BURGUNDIES FROM DOMAINE ANNE & HERVE SIGAUT

I first tasted the wines from this small domaine in 2017 when I tasted the 2015s which were really lovely (to read that article click here [1]). And now I have tasted the 2018s which are even better. If you love Red Burgundies (and who doesn’t?) these are wines that you do not want to miss!

Here is the background of this domaine as presented in the above referenced article:

This small estate has been in existence for four generations. Hervé and Anne Sigaut took over for Maurice Sigaut in 1990 and since that time have made significant improvements in the vineyards and cellar. The winery was updated in 2004 and the wines are made with minimal intervention and judicious use of new oak. At about 15 acres in size, the domaine is blessed with a large proportion of old vines. However, perhaps because the domaine does not have any Grand Crus, the wines have remained “under the radar.”…  The wines are very refined and elegant yet with definition and flavor and each retains its sense of place. In short, they are classic Burgundies that will be a great addition to any cellar. Moreover, in today’s world of Red Burgundy, they are good values. The wines offer a lot of early charm as is characteristic of the vintage (to read the article on the 2015 Burgundy vintage click here [2]) yet will evolve over decades. And, the wines are consistently outstanding from top to bottom. Don’t miss them!  I have added some to my cellar. I suggest that you do the same!!

The statement referenced above relative to the 2015 Anne and Herve Sigaut wines is true as well for the 2018s. However, I believe these 2018s are even better! Made from old vines fruit they all have particularly dark colors and lots of fruit, intensity, and depth. They also exhibit great purity. I remember in the early 80s tasting the White Burgundies from a virtually unknown White Burgundy producer named Coche-Dury. They were very distinct and also had great balance, intensity, and depth. They were at a Grand Cru level but there were no Grand Crus (later they would acquire Corton Charlemagne). Somehow these Anne and Herve Sigaut Red Burgundies leave me with the same impressions in terms of the distinctive quality of the wines that I had tasting those White Burgundies way back then. So my advice is to buy these wines while you can at these prices. They represent very good values in today’s world of Red Burgundy and are delicious Burgundies across the entire range. Furthermore, while delicious now, I believe they will continue to evolve over a long period of time. In my view many of them are at a level that would compare with a Grand Cru. But the prices are much less than that of a Grand Cru.  And, again, I have added some to my cellar and I highly recommend that you do the same! The wines of Domaine Anne and Herve Sigaut are imported by Atherton Wine Imports   San Jose, California.

2018 Anne Sigaut Chambolle Gruencheres 1er Cru
Gruenchers originated from the family of Sigaut. The father of Herve, Maurice, had passed on the Gruenchers to Herve’s brother Laurent. Laurent had given it in fermage to another grower.  When the fermage ended Laurent wanted to give to his brother Herve Sigaut and wife Anne to stay in the Sigaut family. But Sigaut could not put it under the Domaine Anne et Herve Sigaut name because technically Gruenchers was not part of Sigaut’s domaine. For the 2018 vintage they harvested the grapes and purchased the grapes from the brother.  So they had to create a separate entity and came up with “Anne Sigaut” title. For all practical purposes it is produced the same way as all their other wines and Anne Sigaut is looking after the Gruenchers vineyard as well. The Gruenchers holding is 0.41 Hectares and has 45 year old vines.
