STILL DON’T KNOW JURA? YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING!

DOMAINE JEAN-FRANCOIS GANEVAT     Last year I tasted some of the most incredible young wines I have ever experienced. And, just to make it even more interesting, they were wines that I knew nothing about. On March 20, 2011 I posted an article entitled “You Don’t Know Jura”. Reprinted below is the introduction […]

AN ENIGMA WRAPPED IN A RIDDLE – CAN AN UGLY DUCKLING BECOME A SWAN?

I am totally intrigued with the potential for New Zealand wines. It has only been for the last 30 or so years that plantings have increased to the point where the wines are now widely available.

THE MONUMENTAL 2009 WINES OF THE DOMAINE DE LA ROMANÉE-CONTI

I recently attended the West Coast tasting of the 2009 Domaine De La Romanée Conti wines. This was the 33rd vintage to be represented by the importer Wilson Daniels. The tasting was held on January 23, 2012 at Quince Restaurant in San Francisco. A few days prior a similar tasting was held in New York. […]

MORE TERRIFIC 2010 BEAUJOLAIS, ANOTHER 2009 CHINON, AND A 2007 SAINT JOSEPH PLUS A COUPLE OF INEXPENSIVE RED WINES AND A 2009 SANCERRE FROM ONE OF THE GREATEST PRODUCERS

2010 Beaujolais   I did my first review of 2010 Beaujolais a short time ago. (To read that article click here). Below is my introduction from that first review: The 2010 Beaujolais seem to compare with the 2009s in much the same way as the 2010 Red Burgundies compare with the 2009s. In both instances […]

BE THE MASTER OF YOUR DOMAIN!

I once read that a famous singer said that the only wine he drank was Romanée Conti. Now, I have no idea if he meant the vineyard or the Domaine. And, there is a difference. One is the top-rated vineyard in Burgundy that produces only about 400 cases in an average year. Romanée Conti has produced great wines over a very long period of time and sells at a great premium to other Burgundies (currently about $3-5,000 a bottle for recent vintages).

ALONG THE BURGUNDY TRAIL – OCTOBER 2011

I just returned from Burgundy where I tasted 2010 wines from barrel as well as some 2009s and older wines from bottle. I was accompanied by my friends and contributing editors, Geoffrey Troy and John Brincko. Geoffrey has been with me on the trip since our first visit in 1981 along with my friend and […]
