DOMAINE BALLOT-MILLOT – HISTORY, OLDER WINES & THE 2015 VINTAGE, AND TASTING NOTES ON THE 2015S

HISTORY Below is what I said about this Domaine in my first article posted in February 2010: Even a lot of very serious White Burgundy fans may have never heard of this producer. I first became acquainted with the wines in the late 1970s and early 1980s.  In those days, the wines were […]

THE WINE EXPERIENCE & THE JOY OF OLD WINES

Recently in a flurry of emails between several very experienced wine drinkers there were many questions and opinions about old wines including decanting, bottle variation, and different opinions on the same wine by different tasters. All the opinions were from people who have spent their lives tasting and drinking the best wines in the […]

THE BLENDING GAME – IS IT TIME FOR THREE BUCK CHUCK?

THE BLENDING MAN KNOWS!   I have been buying wine and food from Trader Joe’s for over 40 years. Joe Coulombe founded Trader Joe’s in 1958. The first store was in South Pasadena and was called Pronto Market. The larger Trader Joe’s stores followed in 1967. Back in those olden days, I knew […]

OBSERVATIONS ON 1978 WINES

On Saturday I took a bottle of ’78 DRC Montrachet to Providence, the fish restaurant in Los Angeles. It was in great shape and had the same intense yellow color of a recently tasted, still youthful and backward, 2002 Coche Dury Les Caillerets. The DRC is full bodied, with great intensity, complexity, mouthfilling flavors and perfect balance.

A LEGENDARY WHITE BURGUNDY AND TWO OF THE GREATEST EVER CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIRS

I recently wrote an article including tasting notes on a trade tasting of California Pinot Noirs “In Pursuit Of Balance.” It was held at RN74 in San Francisco. The purpose was to showcase California Pinot Noirs that are balanced and not overly extracted and alcoholic. It was a great success. And, if you did not see my article, please take a look under Trade Tastings.

THE OLD BURGUNDIANS

A few years ago, my friends and contributing editors, Edward Lazarus and John Brincko, and I, along with John’s wife, Debbie, and my wife, Laurie, decided to form a group dedicated to drinking old Burgundies from our cellars. We named the group The Old Burgundians, not because of our ages, but because of the old Burgundies that would be our focus.
