Perhaps the biggest story out of Burgundy in recent years is the total transformation of two of the oldest firms in Burgundy. Both Bouchard Père et Fils (founded in 1731) and Remoissenet Père et Fils (founded in 1877) have been transformed from negociant firms purchasing grapes and finished wines to domaines exclusively making wines from grapes grown on their own vineyards. And, make no mistake, both are making some of the best wines in Burgundy and the 2018s at both domaines were great. However, as good as the 2018s were (to read my early assessment of that vintage click here), it looks like the 2019s will also be extraordinary. What a pleasure it is going to be to drink wines from these great domaines over the upcoming vintages and years.

I recently had a chance to taste some barrel samples of the 2019s from Bouchard Père et Fils (and hope to be able to taste the 2019 Remoissenets soon). The 2019 Bouchards promise to be very great wines. The red wines are all dark in color and have great intensity and balance. And the white wines have great purity and balance. Bouchard’s vineyard holdings are the most extensive of any domaine in Burgundy. And, under the direction of cellar master Frédéric Weber, amazing Burgundies have been made at Bouchard over the last number of years. But, even given that, Frédéric says that 2019 has outstanding quality and is his personal favorite vintage over the past decade. And, as usual, I think he is spot on! As I said earlier, Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the very greatest Burgundy domaines and the wines are superb. These are  definitely wines to buy. Don’t miss them!

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Red Wines

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos de la Mousse Premier Cru Monopole
This great vineyard has been solely owned by Bouchard since 1872. With a stunning floral berry perfume with an exotic tinge this wine has layers of complex fruit with underlying floral exotic nuances. Very lush and rounded with a long lingering finish this is a gorgeous Burgundy – Outstanding Plus Potential.

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay Les Caillerets Premier Cru Domaine
This wine has a lovely berry and plum perfume with an exotic nuance and is lush and rounded with lots of fruit and great intensity and depth and a long lingering finish – Outstanding Plus Potential.

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Le Corton Grand Cru Domaine
With a gorgeous plum perfume showing underlying rose petal and spice nuances this wine is very rich and complex with layers of floral tinged fruit with aa faint exotic tinge this is a great Grand Cru Burgundy that exemplifies the the great character, depth, and richness of Corton at its best. It is delicious now but will evolve over decades – Extraordinary Potential.

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Grèves Vigne l’Enfant Jesus Monopole
This 9.68 acre vineyard located in the heart of the Beaune Grèves appellation was acquired by Bouchard Père et Fils in 1791 and they still own the vineyard today. For me, this is consistently one of the very best Côte de Beaune red wines and this 2019 is a real stunner that is one of the best, if not the best, Beaune Grèves Vigne l’Enfant Jesus that I have ever tasted. Showing an incredible exotic oriental spice perfume intermingled with cherry and plum fruit it follows through on the palate with the same profile of great complex fruit and flavor tinged with oriental spice and great depth followed by a long lingering finish. This is simply an incredible wine with a very long life ahead – Extraordinary Potential.

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils White Wines

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune Clos Saint-Landry Premier Cru Monopole
It is on this site that the oldest traces of the Chardonnay grape were found. It has been owned exclusively by Bouchard Père et Fils since 1791. This is always a very elegant wine with great style and finesse that is very appealing young and ages beautifully. The color is light yellow and the wine has a stunning floral exotic tinged perfume. With great charm and flavor this is a delicious under the radar White Burgundy – Outstanding Plus Potential.

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault Genevières Domaine
With a light yellow color this Meursault has a lovely floral exotic tinged perfume. It is balanced and has very pure fruit with floral citrus undertones and a long finish. With great early appeal this is hard to resist now but will evolve beautifully over many years – Outstanding Plus Potential.

2019 Bouchard Père et Fils Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru Domaine
Wow! This is a great White Burgundy. It has a light yellow color and a stunning floral perfume with hints of honeyed spice and citrus. On the palate it has intensity and depth with lots of very pure fruit accented citrus and honeyed spice nuances with an exotic undertone and a long lingering finish – Extraordinary Potential.
