2017 Toad Hollow Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon
Here’s what our friends at Toad Hollow have to say about this wine:
What a dilemma – you’re a collector of expensive Cabernet. You’ve got a cellar full of them just waiting for the right reason to pop the cork – that elegant dinner at a Five-Star restaurant or a monumental anniversary. But what are you going to open on a routine week night that isn’t a $200 bottle but still satisfies your taste for a well-made Cabernet?
Toad Hollow’s 2017 Lodi Cabernet, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is one you can feel good about opening for no reason other than it has the aromas and flavors that first seduced your love of Cab. It gratifies your craving while doing a great job with that mid-week burger, super market rotisserie chicken, or the lazy popcorn night.
I could not agree more. Lodi is an historic grape growing region of California that still remains relatively unknown despite having old vineyards that produce grapes that can make excellent wines. And, because it is still under the radar Lodi grape prices are very affordable and result in excellent wines at relatively low prices. This is a prime example. The wine was made from grapes grown in the cooler vineyards of the eastern rolling hills within the Lodi AVA which is a very good area for Cabernet. Vintage 2017 was characterized by a wet winter and a major heat wave from late August to mid-September. This resulted in high quality wines and slightly lower yields.
This wine has a dark color and a deep perfume with cassis and plum fruit and hints of spice and cigar box. With lots of fruit on the palate and lovely flavors of cassis, cedar, and spice this is a delicious Cabernet with great structure and balance that will surprise you with its ability to age over many years if you can resist its early charm – Outstanding/Outstanding Plus. $17.99 Best Buy
