This is an under the radar Red Burgundy producer that is making consistently lovely wines at reasonable prices. I started writing about them with the 2009 vintage. I had already been tasting, buying, cellaring, and drinking Frédérick Esmonin wines for many years. Consistent with my advice to continue to buy the wines you like each year, I continue to do so today continuing through the current 2013 vintage (to read an article on Domaine Frédéric Esmonin click here).

If you are looking Red Burgundies at affordable prices they can be found in Bourgogne (wine made from the area of Burgundy), village wines (made from a specific village), and wines made from vineyards that are not rated Premier Cru or Grand Cru. The trick is to find a good producer who makes wines from these places. At the top of that list is Frédérick Esmonin. Here are notes on 3 terrific value priced 2013 Domaine Frédérick Esmonin Red Burgundies:

 esmonin 2013

2013 Domaine Frédéric Esmonin Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits
This has a lot of early appeal. With a very nice color the wine has a lovely faintly floral perfume with hints of green olive and a touch of spice. Crisp and bright with lovely cherry tinged fruit, this has Burgundian character and a lot of charm at a very attractive price – Highly Recommended.     $25

2013 Domaine Frédéric Esmonin Côte de Nuits-Villages La Belle Vue
This is a lovely Burgundy. It has a deep color and a lovely berry perfume with hints of cherry. The fruit is very pure and the wine is bright and crisp with very nice balance and a refined elegance – Highly Recommended Plus.     $35

2013 Domaine Frédéric Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jouises Vielles Vignes
Wow! This is the real deal – a gorgeous Burgundy to drink now or keep for many years at a really affordable price. With a deep color the wine has a gorgeous perfume showing plum and berry fruit and just a whiff of smokiness. Showing great style and elegance it is balanced with very pure fruit and has a bright underlying crispness. Drink now or over the next few years and expect it to age effortlessly for many years – Outstanding.    $44

So there you have it – terrific Burgundies at affordable prices. What are you waiting for?

The wines of Domaine Frédéric Esmonin are imported by Atherton Wine Imports Atherton, CA.

Mr. John, probably because of your recommendations from the print Underground days, I have purchased and enjoyed some terrific Esmonin bottles over the years. I still have a few from the 1989 and 1990 vintages, praying these may still drink well today. Thanks once again.
    All the best,
    Bill

      Thanks Bill,
I have not had an 89 or 90 for a long time. I will have to try one. But, I would expect the wines to show very well as they have a long history of aging beautifully!
      In Vino Veritas,
      John
